“Anticipated Holiday Travel Spending Jumps Nearly 10% to more than $65 Billion

“Travel spending will be up as more Americans plan trips over the river and through the woods this holiday season, according to the third annual Access America Vacation Confidence Index released today by Mondial Assistance USA. Nearly six in ten Americans (57 percent) are confident they will take a holiday trip this year, up from 50 percent in 2010. The increase in spending spurred by more travelers will translate to a nearly $6 billion bump for the travel industry as holiday travel spending is expected to reach $65.2 billion, a 10 percent increase from last year.”

“This year’s survey illustrates some good news for the travel industry,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications for Mondial Assistance. “More Americans are traveling this year compared to 2010, and that translates into billions of dollars in extra revenue for travel suppliers. And the good news for Americans is that more people expect to be able to travel this holiday season, reducing the Vacation Deficit by more than 10%.”

This year the vacation deficit index, defined as those who believe it is important to take an annual holiday trip but are not confident they will take one, is down to one in five Americans (21 percent) from nearly one in three (32 percent) last year.
“What we’re seeing is that travel continues to be an important investment for Americans, even in unsettled economic times,” said Durazo. “The combination of increased travel, recovering travel costs and the uncertainty in the economy make travel insurance this year’s ‘must have’ stocking stuffer for holiday travelers.”

Overall Travel Spending is Up this Holiday with car Travel Still Most Popular, But More Plan to Fly

• Air Travel Wins Big: While car travel is still the top mode of transportation (56 percent), more travelers intend to fly to their destinations this year than they have in the past. A third of travelers (34 percent) plan to fly this year, up from 26 percent last year, and 27 percent in 2009.
• Keeping it in the Family: Holiday and family go hand-in hand, so it is not surprising that two thirds of parents with children under 18 reported that a holiday vacation is important.
• Booking Sooner Rather than Later: Nearly half (49 percent) of Americans plan on booking their travel at least two months in advance (compared to 42 percent in 2010) and nearly a quarter intend to book their trip between one and two months out.
• Mars vs. Venus Exception: Women may not find this surprising, but men are more likely to wait until the last minute to book holiday travel, with a third (32 percent) saying that they plan to book within a month of their departure (compared to 21 percent of women).

The clock is ticking down to the holidays and if you are thinking of taking a vacation, don’t wait  till the last minute to plan it or chances are you’ll be left out in the cold. Even if you are driving, plan your route and book any hotels you’ll need on the way to your destination. Bad weather can cause hotels to fill up unexpectedly especially around airports. Also check the route with AAA to make sure there are no construction delays. My advuce for all the holiday travelers, determined to take their vacations this year, is to leave your trouble at home and go!

Airport security slows travelers during the holidays and yet we all know it is without question that we all want the airports to be secure. There must be some things you can do to try to smooth the way for speedy processing through airport security so we can all be safely on our way, right? Yes, you guessed it…we’ve got some travel tips to help you get through airport security checks without delay. ABC News reported on the TSA’s safe holiday travel tips knowing that airport security slows travelers during the holidays but also protects them.

ABC News’ Jason Ryan and Alicia Tarancon report:
Long security lines, children crying, flights delayed, overbooked or even cancelled. Oh yes, the holiday season has finally arrived. And for travelers, that means millions of people flocking to airports, which can lead to a rather hectic holiday experience. John Pistole, the administrator of the Travel and Safety Administration (TSA) is offering passengers tips that will hopefully make their travels a lot easier and safer for the holidays.
Security is on everybody’s mind and TSA is making sure that they ramp up security for those visiting family this season.

“Obviously we’re expecting a large number of people traveling over the holiday season, [with] Thanksgiving coming up, we’re expecting perhaps as many as 3 percent more people traveling than last year,” he said.
People traveling this year can also anticipate a few changes while going through the security lines this year, especially while traveling with children.

“Children 12 and under will be allowed to keep their shoes on generally, we’ll still do random and unpredictable [checks] in case there’s something suspicious, but that addresses a lot of the hassle factor if you will, the inconvenience especially with small children if they have tie shoes and things like that,” Pistole said.

The other change is the “privacy filters,” which are simply the generic outline of a person going through the imaging machine. Currently the TSA has the privacy software upgrades on the Millimeterwave technology, which is more than half of the estimated 500 Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) machines in place at airports. TSA officials say they will begin testing the privacy software on AIT Backscatter systems later this year. Backscatter uses a low range X-ray, where millimeter wave is radio wave.

Privacy however, still remains a concern for many passengers dealing with security at airports. TSA is working on better technology so passengers can keep their shoes and jackets on, and that showing “too much” in these body imaging machines will one day no longer be an issue.

Already, the TSA Pre-Check “Trusted Traveler” Program is currently being implemented in four airports. Passengers who have voluntarily given out their information in Detroit, Dallas Ft. Worth, Miami, and Atlanta airports no longer have to take off their shoes, jackets, and belts.

“The more we know about people who are traveling, the better judgments and decisions we can make,” Pistole said.
When it comes to gifts, leave the expensive gift wrap at home.
“There’s not too many ways of resolving [it] other than opening up the package, so for example last weekend, we found two Christmas packages, wrapped packages, one had probably 50 pounds of marijuana in it,” Pistole said.
So save the gift-wrap for your destination.

Finally, people looking for additional travel tips before they take off for the holidays can visit the TSA website.
“There’s a number of travel tips, especially for those who don’t travel frequently to look at, because not only can you help yourself get through security more quickly and efficiently, but those who are behind you in line — you can help them get through more quickly and efficiently also,” Pistole said.

Whenever I consider airport security I am always reminded of traveling to Israel. Israel being the target of repeated terror attacks from all sides has had to develop the best airport security in the world. They do not ask people to remove their shoes, first thing they do is question you on your travel plans, who you are visiting in the country. I’ve even been asked if I speak Hebrew or not. Okay, a few questions..I’m on my way…with a bottle of water in my hand…no shoes were removed no one scanned my private parts…Just a few eye to eye questions. Of course I had nothing to hide but when you are trained properly you already know that. I felt very safe traveling in and around Israel. Remember, airport security slows people down during the holidays, so be early, pack light and forget the wrapped presents please.
